MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY

About this development

The Modern Museum in Mongolia was established in 1924, and in 1956 it had its own building and began operating as the State Central Museum. The State Central Museum has a wide collection of cultural heritage and natural resources. In 1991, the State Central Museum was divided into several areas in order to further develop the museum based on global trends. At this time, a decision was made to diversify the natural section of the State Central Museum and establish the Museum of Natural History.

1991 was the beginning of the country's social transition, so financial difficulties were a major issue in the cultural sector. In this context, the museum administration has been working hard for more than 10 years to present its exhibits in more than 40 halls on physical geography, geology, minerals, paleontology, birds, plants, insects, amphibians, mammals and human origins. has a history.

The museum staff will increase its collection and analysis, improve the preservation and protection of exhibits, update records, make scientific descriptions for each exhibit, take research to a new level, strengthen its material base, provide specialists with modern equipment, and strengthen its human resources. Our mission was to retrain and continue to train them, especially in foreign relations. It is hoped that this will strengthen the museum in all respects, create a comfortable environment for visitors and become a child-friendly organization.

The Museum of Natural History is the largest specialized center for education, training and promotion in Mongolia, which provides comprehensive information and knowledge on the unique features and patterns of nature and the biodiversity of its distribution. Since its establishment, the museum has intensified field research and enriched it with 400-600 exhibits every year. Today, the museum has more than 12,000 exhibits. The collection includes rare paleontological finds, meteorites, mineral samples, stuffed animals representing biodiversity, and valuable exhibits representing man-made natural heritage. Among them are many unique exhibits that cannot be valued for money.

The museum, which opened in 1956, was closed to the public between 2013 and 2019 due to the end of its useful life. The museum merged with the Central Dinosaur Museum, which operates in the field of paleontology, by Government Resolution No. 281 of July 3, 2019, and has expanded its scope of operations and is now operating normally.

The Government of Mongolia has decided to build a modern museum of natural history, the largest in Asia, that fully meets the museum's standard requirements, and has begun construction of a 39,000-square-meter facility on 6.6 hectares in the Great Sky Valley. With the implementation of this project, Mongolia will turn a new page in the history of museums and start a new stage of museum development.
